Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits to regular massage therapy?

Regular massage and bodywork has many physiological effects, such as:

  • Increasing circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.
  • Stimulating the lymph system, the body's natural defense against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.
  • Relaxing and softening injured and overused muscles.
  • Reducing spasms and cramping.
  • Increasing joint flexibility.
  • Reducing recovery time for strenuous workouts and eliminating subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.

  • Releasing endorphins, the body's natural painkiller. For this reason, massage is being incorporated into treatment for chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.
  • Reducing post-surgery adhesions and edema and reducing and realigning scar tissue after healing has occurred.
  • Improving range-of-motion and decreasing discomfort for patients with low back pain.
  • Relieving pain for migraine and decreasing the need for medication.
  • Providing exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reducing shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range-of-motion.

What can I expect at each session?

At each session, we will review your current state of health, updating any changes physically or medically.  We will consider your symptoms and of discomfort and assess to determine the source and an appropriate treatment plan for the session, and potentially for future treatment. Home self care and  referrals to other experts or classes may be considered to serve your body's needs as well.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

You and the practitioner will discuss the desired outcome of your session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. You will not be touched on or near your gentials (male or female) or breasts (female).

How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your session.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?

Yes. That's why it is imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medication you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session.

It is important to note that there are some conditions where circulatory massage is not recommended. For example, massage is contraindicated in people with:

  • Certain forms of cancer
  • Phlebitis
  • Some cardiac problems
  • Some skin conditions
  • Infectious disease

How often should I get a massge?

Frequency of massage therapy is a personal decision that can be best determined by talking with your therapist about your treatment goals.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?

The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with the clean linens.

Will I be covered during the session?

You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage and bodywork is traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should always undress to your level of comfort. Keep in mind that, you will be properly draped during the entire session. Chair and Thai massage are performed through full clothing and can be a great introduction to bodywork.
